Watermelon, cucumber, apples or strawberries seem to be edible fruits for most of us but for a talented artist like Tomoko Sato they are empty spaces to create artwork. Fruit carving is believed to have originated in China during the Tang Dynasty which dates back to 618-906 AD. Thailand is popular for its fruit carving art where they have their own style and craft. Tomoko's visit to Thailand in 2004 inspired her to start vegetable and fruit carving and later became an expert in carving edible sculptures. Layers of flowers, three-dimensional roses, detailed crafting of delicate petals and even birds out of fruits is now a widespread artwork not only in cultural and traditional events but also in hotels and restaurants. These vegetable and fruit carvings find their space in luxury cuisines, wedding ceremonies and serve as decorating items. Here we share a few beautiful vegetable and fruit carving artworks of Tomoko Sato for you to enjoy.
