The circular coin shaped bas relief sculptures called hobo nickel is an impressive art form which dates back to the 18th century. These hobo nickels played the role of love tokens, as gifts in Britain, France and South Africa which are attached to jewellery later. With the introduction of the buffalo nickel the art form became famous which mostly features small heads. The creation of a hobo nickel takes hundreds of hours for the artists, they use chisels, knives, hammers and any other metal fit to shape the coin. Bertram Wiegand and his student George Washington are famous hobo nickel artists in America. Now the contemporary coin engravers continue to create beautiful hobo coins.
